This summer is one of the driest in many years, and while the sunshine and warmth can feel very nice, they also dry our grasses and bushes, causing them to be very good fuel for brush fires.
In a little more than one week, Rural Westport (Fire District #3) has had three brush fires. Luckily, they have all been small and quickly extinguished by volunteers from our local fire departments.
The fact that we have suffered these fires, most probably the result of carelessness and smoking; is proof that we, as a community, must become more aware of our current extreme fire danger.
Please be very careful with your cigarettes and other sources of flame.
Our community has committed fire departments, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the men and women of the Westport Volunteer Fire Department and neighboring departments that responded when we needed their help.
