John Cecil Sharp – known best as “Blue Water John” or “Big John” - of Grayland, passed peacefully in his sleep after a valiant battle with cancer on Monday, December 15, 2014 at 11 a.m. His wish was to pass quietly with a fishing pole in his hand and we are confident from the peaceful look on his face that his wish was granted.
John was an amazing man who projected a love of life. He was a unique and charismatic skipper who shared his grandfather’s spirit and special understanding of animals and the sea. He was well known for his great smile, sense of humor and easygoing charm. He was a generous and compassionate person who made long-lasting friendships.
John was born in Bowbells, North Dakota to Cecil and Elice Sharp. He later moved with his family to Tacoma, Washington; returning to North Dakota each year to help with the harvest.
He proudly served his country as a Marine and was a Life Member of VFW Post #3057 in Westport.
He was a boat captain in Louisiana transporting crews to the oilrigs. His love of the sea brought him to Westport, where he worked as a commercial and charter fisherman; owning several boats and Blue Water Charters.
John is survived by Nancy Sharp of Grayland; his children; Susan Hinton of Clallam Bay, Lorraine Lee of Arizona, Wayne Sharp of Montesano, Kathleen Sharp of Westport, Lola Worrell of Orting, Jeff Rudolph (son in spirit), eight grandsons, one granddaughter, seven great-grandchildren and more friends than can be counted.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the caring staff of Grays Harbor Community Hospital for helping us through this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, which was his favorite charity.
A celebration of his life was held Saturday, Dec. 20, at Westport South Beach VFW Post #3057 in Westport, Wash.
