According to a recent interview on Aberdeen’s KBKW Radio, developer John Yonich is working toward building an outdoor amphitheater on a portion of the former Links golf course development property near Half Moon Bay in Westport. He envisions a venue that would accommodate crowds as large as 20,000 for major concerts.
KBKW reporter/commentator David Haviland posted a recap of the interview on social media Dec. 5.
Yonich owns and operates the D&R Theatre in downtown Aberdeen, where he has had great success in booking major talent since renovating the historic building.
The developer told Haviland that he came up with the idea after seeing the Army Corps of Engineers piling sand along the shoreline of Half Moon Bay as part of ongoing shoreline maintenance.
“So, I spoke to some other people that are in the festival business. One thing led to another. The William Morris Agency, which I’m pretty good friends with, they flew up from Nashville and said this is potentially the best site in the United States — Westport,” Yonich said on-air.
“We’d be similar to the Gorge. They’ve got the weather but sometimes that works against them too,” he said.
According to real estate broker for the property, Mike Coverdale of Windermere Westport, the sale of the property is “in process,” but there is no specific date in sight for a potential transaction completion at this time.
