During the last 30 days in the Grayland area, there were 59 service requests, however, no reported burglaries, thefts or vehicle prowls. Resident Deputies Jordan Stullick and Sean McKechnie made four arrests for warrants and other traffic related crimes during that span.
Rural Westport
The surrounding area south of Westport, however, had significant issues over the last 30 days. Not only were there 135 service requests for that same time frame, there were three reported burglaries, one reported theft, and 10 reported vehicle prowls.
The various crimes occurred on the following streets: Forrest St. S., Olympia St. S., Melbourne St., Hoquiam Lane and Claymore Lane W.
In addition to Deputies Stullick and McKechnie, the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office increased patrols with other deputies and the detective division assisted with the criminal investigations. In all, 10 arrests were made for just the surrounding Westport area that included warrant arrests, burglary, driving offenses, assaults, and court order violations.
Lock vehicles
With respect to the various vehicle prowls, I believe all of them occurred with unlocked vehicles. Among the items taken were wallets and electronic equipment. Again, our recommendation is not to leave valuables in your vehicle and preferably lock your doors.
Burglary arrest
Regarding the burglaries, one of the homes had a hidden surveillance system that provided footage of the suspect. As a result, deputies and detectives made an arrest on Wednesday, March 2, involving a 23-year-old Westport transient, Shayne T. Anderson. The suspect was formally charged that same day with Residential Burglary and Violation of the Uniform Controlled Substance Act. Due to this subject being formally charged, he can now be identified.
Investigators believe he had involvement with at least one other burglary and possibly the vehicle prowls. Anderson has an extensive criminal history.
While Anderson was in custody, deputies responded to another reported burglary on March 3 at 12:25 a.m. at Ocosta Jr/Sr High School. The reporting party advised that a male subject was on the roof of the school and fled toward the apartments behind the school. A sheriff’s department K-9 unit was on duty and responded to the scene, as did Resident Deputy Stullick and Westport PD. The suspect was not located at that time and the investigation continues.
Observe, report, document
Obviously we have more individuals out there committing crimes. As always, please report suspicious activity to the dispatch center. To report a crime, call 911. The non-emergency phone number for the Sheriff’s Office is 360- 533-8765.
As always, the Sheriff’s Office requests that citizens observe, report and document any suspicious activity seen.
Steve Shumate is the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office Chief Criminal Deputy.
