Palmer graduates from Navy Quartermaster School with honors

Class of 2014 Ocosta High School graduate, Josie Lee Palmer, left for Naval Great Lakes Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., on Nov. 17, of last year and graduated basic training Jan.16, as a Seaman Recruit.
She remained at Great Lakes, attending Quartermaster “A” School, from which she graduated with honors on April 9, as a Quartermaster Seaman Recruit (QMSR).
Assignment
Palmer has been assigned to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii aboard the USS Chafee, DDG-90, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer.
Shortly after arrival, she will deploy overseas for 8 to 12 months.
Responsibilities
Her responsibilities are primarily navigation, assistant to the officers of the deck, serving as helmsman, performing ship control navigation and bridge watch. She will maintain navigational instruments and ensure correct navigational time.
She will procure, correct, use navigational and oceanographic publications an charts, perform weather observations, determine compass and gyro errors, compute tide and tidal data, keep logs and records, determine ship’s position by visual and electronic means, compute sunrise and sunsets and ensure navigation rules-of-the-road are administered to prevent collisions at sea.
In addition, Palmer may render “honors & ceremonies,” send and receive visual messages, serve as petty officer in-charge of tugs, self-propelled barges and other yard and district crafts.
Family matters
Josie is the daughter of Dee Malloy of Westport and Leon Palmer of Aurora, Colorado. Her brother Jorey graduated from OHS in 2012 and attends college in Spokane.
