Parents of members of the Ocosta High School Class of 2016 held their last fundraiser of many last Saturday, March 19. The group has been diligently raising money since last summer for a great All Night Safe & Sober Senior Party following Commencement this June.

Poker Tourney

Saturday’s event, the 3rd Annual Senior Parents Poker Tournament, included three tables that seated 10 players. Grayland resident Paul Johnson, an old hand at running poker tourneys on the South Beach, volunteered to organize the event with the able set-up assistance of fellow volunteer Jim Mankin.

Each competitor ponied up an initial $30 buy-in to play with the opportunity to purchase more chips as needed throughout the evening.

Prizes donated from parents of seniors, community members and local businesses ranging in value from $25 to $300 were awarded to the top 20 placers.

South Beach resident Jack Torrey took home First Place honors this year. Doug Quinby took 2nd, Judy Davis 3rd, Sarah Beck was 4th and Jim Mankin 5th.

Extreme party planned

When the final count was made, the Senior Parents had raised more than $3,000 toward the party they are planning at Aberdeen’s Extreme Fun Center from 10:30 p.m. graduation night until 5 a.m. the following morning.

While there, grads will have access to all the activities the Center has to offer, including laser tag, riding go-karts, mini-bowling, arcade games and a whole lot more.

On to shopping

The parents group will now concentrate on purchasing great gifts that will help this year’s graduates set up housekeeping in style on their own following graduation.

The Senior Parents group involved in this fundraiser would like to extend their gratitude to not only the players and dealers, but also to all those who so generously donated prizes for the event. They extend their thanks, as well, to VFW Post #3057 for generously donated their hall for the tournament.
