Every second Saturday in May, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America collect non-perishable food from their postal customers who participate in the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive — the largest one-day food drive in the nation. The drive has delivered more than one billion pounds of food the past 20 years.

While that drive is very successful elsewhere, on the South Beach, the majority of postal customers receive their mail at the three post offices located in Westport, Grayland and Tokeland.

Donation bin

Since that is the case, the Westport Postal Station has placed a donation bin in the main lobby across from the service counter for the convenience of postal customers who wish to participate in this annual food drive through Friday, May 22.

Postal patrons are encouraged to drop off a donation of non-perishable food when you come to the post office to pick up your mail between now and Friday, May 22. Let’s fill that bin to overflowing, South Beachers!

Summer needs increase

The need for services from the South Beach Food Bank will increase considerably when school is out in less than a month, when families who rely on the free and reduced lunch programs offered at school will no longer have those services available during the summer months.
