Stalwart beachcombers keep finding amazing items on the South Beach. From floats to bottles with foreign labels, Japan tsunami debris to glass fishing floats, the variety is intriguing.

Many thanks to all of you who shared photos and information about your unique beach finds this winter for the 4th Annual South Beach Bulletin Beachcombing Bonanzas Contest.

The winner

This year’s winner was an easy choice, not only for the uniqueness of some of her finds, but also for the sheer volume. North Cove resident and professional photographer, Marcy Merrill, hits the beach at Washaway nearly every day to walk her dog and chronicle on film the flotsam and jetsam that are so abundant there. Among our favorites of Marcy’s finds this season is a nearly six-inch-long glass rolling pin float she found on Feb. 17, a dolphin skull found on Feb. 3 and a rusted and encrusted clam shovel discovered just recently.

As this year’s contest winner, Marcy will receive a $30 gift certificate to the South Beach business of her choice.

Honorable mentions

Honorable mentions go this year to Grayland resident Duane Johnson and Cohassett Beach resident Marianne Pence. Both of these dedicated beachcombers also walk the beaches in their neighborhoods on a near-daily basis and each has found some great items this season.

Enter your finds

We’re hoping that these beachcombers and many more of you who have great finds enter your beach borne treasures in the Grayland Driftwood Show that will be held April 2 and 3 at the historic Grayland Community Hall. See the article on Page 1 for details on when and how to enter.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Beachcombing Bonanzas Contest this year. Look for the start of the 5th annual treasure hunt in the fall.

In the meantime — happy hunting!
