The Grayland Players will present six performances of the multiple Tony Award winning musical, “Fiddler on the Roof,” at the historic Grayland Hall under the direction of Carolyn Barker.
The play opens tomorrow evening, Friday, May 9, with the curtain going up at 7:30 p.m.
Based on Sholom Aleichem’s stories, “Fiddler” is set in a small village in 1905 Russia. The play tells the tale of Tevye, a Jewish milkman who lives his entire life based on time-honored traditions. His family includes five daughters that break from those traditions as they marry for love rather than for prosperity, creating no small angst for their father.
“Fiddler on the Roof” opened on Broadway September 22, 1964 and became the longest-running musical up to its time, with more than 3,000 performances over a nearly nine-year period.
The production includes several now-standard songs, including “Sunrise, Sunset,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and “If I Were a Rich Man.”
It was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning nine, including Best Musical, score, book, direction and choreography.
