Monthly Writers Group

July 13 - The South Beach Writers Group will meet Saturday, July 13, from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. in the Westport library meeting room for writers high school age and older.

Bring an excerpt to read: Poem, short story, blog or book chapter. The group’s goal is to inspire and encourage fellow writers.

New members are always welcome.

The group meets the second Saturday of each month.

GH Genealogical Society

July 13 - The Grays Harbor Genealogy Society will meet at the Hoquiam Library on Saturday, July 13, at 10 a.m. Doors open 9:30 a.m.

The society meeting will be followed by a presentation at 11 a.m. by Timberland Regional Library Reference Librarian Mike Potts. He will share techniques to “Break Down Genealogy Brick Walls” while researching your family tree.

The Public is welcome.

Folk Tunes and Songs with the Brownsmead Flats

July 17, 11 a.m.-noon, for all ages. The Brownsmead Flats takes the stage with both traditional and original tunes and songs, often filled with humor. The Astoria-based quintet entertains with guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and great vocal harmonies. This Summer Reading event is part of a Timberland Regional Library districtwide program.

Family Feature Film

July 20, 1-3 p.m., for all ages. Join a group of rabbits as they face many dangers to protect their home. Popcorn provided.

Read It, Film It, Screen It: Book Trailer Contest

Through August 31, for teens. Middle and high school teens up to age 18, make a book trailer for a favorite book for the chance to win prizes and be featured on the Timberland Regional Library website. Think movie trailer, but for a book. Contest entries due August 31. Visit www.TRL.org/booktrailer for details. Summer Read and Feed

You are invited to bring canned or other non-perishable food items to the library all summer for the local food bank to distribute to those in need.

School Circus Camp performances

July 19 - Ocosta Elementary Student Council, Ocosta PTO, and the Ocosta School District will sponsor the second annual Jason Quick Circus Arts Camp on the campus of Ocosta Elementary School July 15-20.

Students signed up for one of two sessions and both filled within two days.

Students will work with Quick on tumbling, tight rope walking, trapeze skills, juggling, balancing, and other skills during the week under his tent.

A performance for parents, family, and friends will be held on the last day of camp.

The first session performance will be Friday, July 19, from 1 – noon. The second session performance will be the same day, from 3 – 4 p.m.

Mermaid Carving Madness event

July 20 - The inaugural Mermaid Carving Madness show and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Drive will be held at the Mermaid Deli and Pub on E. Patterson Ave. in Westport’s Marina District on Saturday, July 20.

Several chainsaw artists will begin their work in the parking lot at 10 a.m. with a quick-carve competition at 2 p.m.

An auction will be held for the completed pieces at 4 p.m.

Sunday carving will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a High Noon two-man ‘Carving Standoff’ to create a 15-minute piece.

At 2 p.m., there will be a raffle drawing for a pre-carved piece by Tony Robinson to benefit Multiple Sclerosis research. Tickets for the raffle at $2 each will be sold on Saturday and Sunday.

If there is enough interest, a short auction will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Mermaid Deli is offering food and drink specials throughout the event.

Eastside Street Rods Show ‘N Shine

July 20 - Vintage vehicles are placed on display along Westport’s Westhaven Drive on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Come check out great classic rides that members of the Eastside Street Rod Club of Redmond bring to the coast.

Master Gardeners plant clinic

July 20 - WSU Master Gardeners plant clinics will be offered through September in various locations in Grays Harbor and Pacific counties this year.

Many will be held in the Demonstration Garden at the Grays Harbor Fairgrounds in Elma or in the Extension office if it rains.

All clinics and workshops run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The next clinic will be at the fairgrounds Saturday, July 20.

Beachcombers Flea Market in Grayland

July 20 - An outdoor rain or shine Flea Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday July 20, Saturday, Aug. 17 and Saturday, Sept. 7 at 2172 SR105 in Grayland next door to the mini mall across the street from the Local Bar & Grill.

Cost for a 12’x18’ space is $20. Vendor fees are due a minimum of one week prior to the event.

20% of the proceeds from vendor fees will be donated to Westport Cub Scout Pack #180 to help support our local youth.

Summer Scholastic Book Fair July 22-25

July 22 - Yes, you read it correctly… Scholastic has agreed to send out four cases of materials, including graphic novels and discounted books for a book fair during summer school.

The book fair will be open July 22 – July 25 on the stage in the Ocosta Elementary School multipurpose room. Look for the big banner on the side of the school.

The book fair will be open from 8:30 – 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 – noon each day.

Elk River Challenge

July 27 - Bring your kayak, canoe, rowboat, or surfboard with paddles or oars, and don’t forget your life vest and whistle! Contestants start their human-powered race at Brady’s Oysters at the foot of the Elk River Bridge and race up into the Elk River estuary and back over a 7-mile or 2-mile round-trip course. Christmas in July Dinner Auction

July 20 - Each year, VFW Post #3057 and its Auxiliaries raise funds for a community Children’s Christmas Party in December. The biggest fundraising project for the party is set for Saturday, July 20, at the VFW Post Home, 211 E. Pacific Ave. in uptown Westport.

Billed as Christmas in July, the event is open to everyone. Community members and visitors are most welcome and encouraged to participate in some or all of the activities offered.

The event starts at 1 p.m. with a Silent Auction. A fire-grilled salmon dinner will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. at $12.50 per person. The live auction starts at 5 p.m.

There also will be a raffle for a new TV and large BBQ.

All activities originate at the VFW Post Home at 211 E. Pacific Ave. in uptown Westport.

Broomstick Pool

July 25 - Broomstick Pool at the Local Bar and Grill is cancelled for the month of July. Games will resume on August 29.

Tokeland Wood Fest

July 27 - It’s all about one-of-a-kind wood art in Tokeland on Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28. Carvers, builders, and craftsmen will gather for the 6th annual Tokeland Wood Fest on the grounds adjacent to the Tokeland Marina.

Wood artisans, including whittlers, carvers and one-of-a-kind furniture makers, will demonstrate their skills and sell their works both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Enjoy live music and festival food, as well.

All participants must submit their applications no later than Monday, July 15.

Grayland Open Jet Ski Competition

Senior House Bingo

Bingo is played every Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Westport South Beach Senior House. The first two cards are free and each one after that costs 25 cents. Play generally lasts until 2:30 p.m.

The Senior House is located at 214 E. Pacific Ave.

Grayland Fire

Grayland Fire Department volunteers (GHFD#11) meet and train every Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the fire hall located at 1785 State Route 105, Grayland.

The board meeting is held on the first Wednesday every month at 5:30 p.m.

Volunteers needed. The public is always welcome to attend.

Bible Study

Living Hope Church hosts a Bible study group at the church each Wednesday at 6 p.m. All community members and visitors are welcome.

The church is located at 617 S. Forrest St. in uptown Westport.

Volunteers needed at museum and lighthouse

The Westport Maritime Museum and Grays Harbor Lighthouse are in need of volunteers to help in the Historical Society’s mission to preserve and interpret the history of the South Beach.

Volunteers have a very important position in our community in helping to keep the doors open to the public.

Master Gardeners online help

You can get answers to your gardening questions any time online by using the local WSU Master Gardener online plant clinic.

To submit your question, go to www.pnwmg.org and click on “Ask a Master Gardener,” found on the left side of the screen. WSU Master Gardeners from Grays Harbor and Pacific counties work year-round to answer any questions you submit.

Grief support group

A weekly grief support group meets at the Raymond Library, 507 Duryea St. in Raymond every Wednesday from 3-4 p.m. The group is facilitated by Harbors Home Health & Hospice at no charge. More info: 800- 772-1319.
