Ten OHS wrestlers advance to regional tourney this Saturday

The Wildcat wrestling team began their 2017 post-season run on Saturday at the District 4 1B/2B Sub Regional Wrestling Tournament. This year’s tournament was held last Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Northwest Sports HUB Facility in Centralia.

Ocosta finished fourth in the fifteen-team field with 183 points. Ilwaco (350 points), Kalama (202) and Adna (200) were the top three teams. Other schools represented included Toledo, Winlock, Wahkiakum, North Beach, South Bend, Raymond, Rainier, Chief Leschi, Napavine, Life Christian and Onalaska.

Three finalists

Eleven Wildcats wrestled in the tournament, with three finalists and two individual champions. Kaleb Orton, Sam Quinby and Matthew Hart each wrestled their way to the championship round. Kaleb Orton won his 120lb bracket with a first round bye, a pin over Aiden Worlton of Raymond, a pin over Jacob Hammond of Wahkiakum and a pin in the finals match over Tony Merino of Ilwaco.

At 132lbs, Sam Quinby started with a bye, then recorded a pin against teammate Brandon Thomas. Sam pinned Aaron Slape of Adna in the Semis, and went on to defeat Joseph Lewis of South Bend by a score of 8-7 in the final.

Matthew Hart finished second on the day, with a bye, a pin, a 3-1 decision and a 9-1 loss to Matthew Slape in the final.

Seven more to Regional

Placing third at 138lbs for the Cats was Cosmo Silver, who pinned Corbin Balzer of Adna in 52 seconds. Kalvyn Scott and Hayden Hoff finished fourth at 160lbs and 182lbs. Gabe Elder (152lbs), Noah Martin (160lbs) and Tucker Deranleau (220lbs) each placed fifth, while Daniel Quinby finished in sixth place at 126lbs.

Freshman Brandon Thomas wrestled for the Wildcats at 132lbs, but did not advance to regionals.

The top seven finishers move on the WIAA 1B/2B Regional Tournament held at Adna on Saturday, Feb. 11. The seventh place wrestlers will wrestle the second place finisher from the NW Sub Regional, and the winner earns a spot in the tournament. Regional wrestling begins at 9:30 a.m.

The top five placers at the Regional Tournament qualify for the State Tournament on Feb. 17 and 18 at the Tacoma Dome.
