Heather Sweet, an 11-year veteran of the Ocosta School District, has been named superintendent with the recently announced retirement of current superintendent Kurt Hilyard. She is scheduled to start July 1, pending contract negotiations.
Sweet started her career in the district as the elementary school principal and is currently the district’s teaching and learning/special services director. Hilyard said she completed her superintendent endorsement from Washington State University in 2017.
Hilyard said he plans to retire after 33 years as a superintendent and 38 years overall in education. He plans to relocate closer to family in Port Orchard. He took over for Superintendent Paula Akerlund, who held the position for 6 years, in July 2017.
