An unattended beach fire is suspected of starting a brush fire early Friday morning at 2700 Jetty Haul Road in Westport, according to a statement released by South Beach Regional Fire Authority battalion chief Daryl Brown.

At about 5:30 a.m. Friday, fire personnel were dispatched to the location for the report of an unknown type fire. Upon arrival the first arriving engine found a brush fire believed to be started by an unattended beach fire made out of driftwood near the dunes, said Brown. The fire, about 400 feet by 150 feet in size, was contained and extinguished within the first hour of operations but required several hours and personnel to prevent re-ignition.

There were no injuries reported associated with the fire.
